Properly storing dog food is important to ensure its freshness, nutritional quality, and to prevent contamination. Here are some guidelines on how to store dog food:
1. Food Quality Matters:
A high-quality dry food that does not contain cheap filler ingredients such as grain, will not deteriorate as quickly. High carbohydrate foods are much more likely to become stale quicker when left exposed to open air. A premium ‘80/20’ dry food should not lose any of its nutritional value once opened, providing it is stored in a cool and dry environment.
2. Original Packaging:
Keep dog food in its original packaging when possible. The packaging is designed to maintain freshness and preserve the best before life of the food.
3. Airtight Containers:
If the original packaging is not resealable or if you buy dog food in bulk, transfer the food to airtight containers. These containers help keep out air and moisture, preventing the food from becoming stale and reducing the risk of contamination.
4. Heat & Sunlight:
Store dog food in a cool, dry place. Exposure to heat and humidity can accelerate the degradation of the food and promote the growth of mould. Avoid storing it near appliances that generate heat. Keep dog food away from direct sunlight. Sunlight can cause fats in the food to become rancid and can also contribute to nutrient degradation.
5. Check Expiry Dates:
Always check the expiration or “best by” date on the dog food packaging. Use the oldest bags first to ensure that the food is consumed before it expires. If you buy dog food in bulk, rotate your bags to ensure that older food is used before newer purchases.
6. Clean Storage Containers:
Regularly clean and sanitise storage containers, with a pet safe sanitiser such as Anigene or any other DEFRA approved formulas, to prevent the build-up of bacteria or mould. Wash containers with soap and water, and make sure they are completely dry before adding new food.
7. Keep Away from Pests:
Store dog food in a location that is not easily accessible to pests, such as rodents or insects. Consider using pest-proof containers if you live in an area prone to infestations.
8. Tips:
Fold the top of the bag and use clothes pegs or a rubber band to hold it shut. Store the dog food bag inside a plastic or metal waste bin especially if kept in a shed or garage. If storage space inside the house is a concern, decant the food into a smaller air tight container such as a tub or Tupperware box.
